![]() ![]() Obtained a satellite image of Susquehanna County and applied a series of mathematical equations, converting the raw pixel values to values in celsius. Finally, in order to gather land surface temperature data, Lily She first sourced public data in oil and gas well locations from open data websites, which she then combined with Susquehanna census tract boundaries to find the well density for each census tract. She conducted her experiment by transforming a raw satellite image into a visual heat map using the geographic information system ArcGIS. Her area of focus was Susquehanna County, PA due to its high drilling and fracking activity. At TREES, Lily investigated the correlation between land surface temperature and the deforested area caused by the installation of oil and gas wells. She was interested in how the lack of shade from trees can affect the microclimate. ![]() Lily Muehlenhard was a rising senior at Central High School in Philadelphia Pennsylvania during the TREES program. He deeply enjoyed this unique research program and encourages anyone interested in environmental science to apply to the TREES program and expand their horizons. He also plays soccer for his school JV soccer team and does crew. Outside of school, he enjoys skipping rocks, playing games, and hiking. In school, he enjoys being part of the Math Team, the MATES newspaper club (), and playing cello for his school orchestra. Max was excited with this experience in a real laboratory and was very grateful for the guidance and patience that Dr. The effects of heat and UV on antibiotics’ activity were assessed using the test systems. Bacterial growth with different antibiotic concentrations was investigated in plating tests and spectrophotometer quantitation of bacteria liquid culture. Coli bacteria growth as the readout of the antibiotic activity. As his summer project in TREES, Max used E. Since he loves to drink milk every day, he was interested in the antibiotics’ usage in the dairy industry as treatment of infection in cows and the potential impacts on the environment and human health. Maximilian Lin was a rising junior at George School when he attended the TREES program. ![]()
